Muiderslot (Muiden Castle)

Count Floris V built this stone castle at the mouth of the river Vecht back in 1280. The River was the trade route to Utrecht, one of the most important trade towns of that age. The castle was used to enforce a toll on the traders. It boasts walls of well over 1.5 meters thick and a large moat.

The castle has an interesting history of glory and neglect. Through royal intervention the castle was restored to its 17th century glory and is today a National Museum

There is a good collection of weapons and armor and some interactive knight themed games for children. In the garden you can find the aviary with an occasional raptor show.

The adjacent small town of Muiden is an unknown pearl and on a sunny day we recommend to have a cold drink in one of several cafes in the old harbor.

A visit to the Muiden Castle could be combined with a tour along the Vecht or as a short stop on the way back from the Hoge Veluwe or Giethoorn.
