Nature and art

Just over one hour drive from Amsterdam lies the National Park De Hoge Veluwe. It is the largest lowland nature reserve in northwest Europe. Characterized by its sand dunes and sprawling forest it supports a large population of wild animals including deer and wild boar. Previously the private hunting estate of the Kroller-Muller family, it was donated to the Dutch public together with their art collection.

This magnificent collection is today housed in the Kroller-Muller museum in the middle of the nature park. Famous for containing many of  Van Gogh’s famous masterpieces, it also boasts works by Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger and Piet Mondrian amongst  many others.

In the gardens around the museum compound you will find one of Europe’s largest collection of sculptures including works by: Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Richard Serra and Claes Oldenburg.

Other attractions in the park are:
•    The Museonder is the world’s first underground nature museum.
•    The St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge was designed by the famous Dutch architect Berlage and was completed in 1919. Guided tours are conducted on most days.
•    Free bicycles are scattered around the park for the use of the visitors in the many well marked bicycle tracks.

For those who wish to combine the visit to the National Park with another attraction a good idea will be a visit to: Paleis Het Loo
Het Loo palace has been the residence of the Dutch royal family for three centuries. It has been open to the public since 1984 after undergoing substantial restoration work. The sumptuously furnished interiors and the reconstructed gardens breath the atmosphere of their seventeenth century origin.
